PC Locked

September 13th, 2008 - 59 views - Print This Post - Print as PDF

It’s not mine. But a client of mine. The family just subscribe to streamyx. For the first time installing internet connection sure give them extra curiosity. Well, curiosity killed the cats. And, harm the computer

After few days, I received a call from the mother. She said that their computer cannot access the internet. As the person that incharged to fix the line before, being responsible, I went there to checked the line. Everything is alright, except the computer. I switched on, load the Windows XP SP1. Log on, and only display the wallpaper. No exploer.exe, no rundll32.dll. Perfect, means that safe mode also cannot help.

This is where linux come in. Well, there is other way around, but since the cdrom (yep cdrom) not helping enough, u can forget the bartpe or WinPE. And also, the time ticking as my boss keep calling me to go to some other places.

Using Damn Small Linux, which was “put” in a thumbdrive, I was able to access the documents and also the files inside the hard drive. Well, poor auntie, the mother, her thesis gone since that her child deleted her files which was suspected as virus.

So, how to install Damn Small Linux to a thumbdrive and make it bootable. Following the tutorial in pendrivelinux.com, it takes me bout 15 minutes to perform the tutorial. Well, excluding the download time. Haha. The link will bring you to the original tutorial.

You  need a thumbdrive (at least 64MB, I’m using 1G), HP-USB format tools, Damn Small Linux-embedded and SysLinux. Any file extractor, but this is optional, since nowadays everybody use it.

Step1: Format your Thumbdrive

Step2: Extract dsl-embedded.zip and copy and paste the whole files that inside dsl-embedded folder, into your Thumbdrive. The one you formated earlier. Don’t copy the folder, but the files inside instead.

Step 3: Extract syslinux-3.36.zip. Copy the syslinux folder to C:\ drive. It will be easier later, especially to who ever don’t know how to use command promt (I bet there will be)

Step4: Click Start > Choose Run > Type in cmd > Press OK Button

Step5: Using the command prompt, go to the syslinux folder. Then type:

syslinux.exe -ma H:

where H: is your thumbdrive drive letter (mine is H)

Step6: Tada ~ finish already  to set your thumbdrive. Now, just restart your computer, set the bios so that it boot from usb-hdd then, wallah ~ ur already in linux environment ;)

Daily Task:

  • I’m working on weekend :(
  • Still can’t find suitable job.
  • I’m bored
  • I miss photographing… bali got speedlite already, i dont even have a single body :(

p/s: do you know, there is a campaign about poverty. Checkout my ads part on the right side, you may click that. (dont worry, it wont gimme a cent) There is one company Kiva. We can give loan as little as $25 (dollar I think, haha) through Kiva to unique entrepreneur in the developing country. Checkout their website. Great isn’t it ;)
